Boston, MA – June 11, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and Homelessness honored Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. and the firm’s program coordinators, attorneys Colin Van Dyke and Jehanne Bjornebye, for their dedication to the Massachusetts Legal Clinic for the Homeless.  The firm was recognized at the organization’s 21st Annual Meeting on June 9 at the offices of Nixon Peabody.

The Lawyers Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and Homelessness was founded in 1988 by the Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association.  Its mission is to promote the development of affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and strengthen communities by providing pro bono legal services to nonprofit organizations and to individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Mintz Levin’s attorneys staff at least two legal clinics annually for clients at various Boston homeless shelters, including the Pine Street Inn and St. Francis House, providing legal representation on a variety of legal needs.  Typical cases deal with issues such as housing, bankruptcy, social security, criminal records, and sex offender registration and classification.

Starting in 1994, Mintz Levin was one of the first firms to participate in the on-site legal clinics and, over the years, its attorneys and senior professionals have accepted more than 250 cases from the Lawyers Clearinghouse. The firm’s program coordinators are responsible for organizing firm trainings, clinic attendance, staffing cases, and have been successfully working to expand participation beyond firm employees to Mintz Levin clients.
