HOME FULLY RESTORED BY PUTNAM VOCATIONAL STUDENTS TO BE AUCTIONED ON TUESDAY
Springfield, MA – June 18, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Domenic J. Sarno will be on hand to showcase a home completely restored by Springfield high school students as an outcome of collaboration between the City of Springfield and Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy. Several classes of students worked hands on to rehabilitate a vacant, dilapidated property that was foreclosed for the non-payment of taxes by the City of Springfield. The opportunity has provided students a unique, hands-on, educational experience.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “This has is a win-win for the City; students benefit from the hands on learning experience, while the business community is allotted an opportunity to actively engage a future pool of qualified skilled laborers and the neighborhood benefits from another home being fully restored aptly maintained and placed back on the tax rolls.”
The project required extensive work from various specialty classes offered at Putnam including Carpentry, Sheet-metal, Electrical, HVAC and Horticulture. The rehabilitation of the property included:
• Framing and finishing an new addition to the rear of the property
• Installation of a new roof
• New sheetrock, counters, cabinets, flooring, exterior siding, masonry, woodworking
· Installation of a new front porch and rear deck
• Re-wire and install electrical service from the street and replacement of all fixtures
• New HVAC system – including new furnace and baseboard hot-water system
• Creation and installation of new gutters/downspouts
• Loam/seeded/re-landscaped yard
• Doug Dreyer Plumbing donated their labor to install all new plumbing at the property
• Preferred Drywall donated their labor to train the students and supervise the installation of new sheetrock
Students worked side-by-side with teachers and other professionals every step of the way, providing them with practical, invaluable, experience that they have and will be able to utilize post-graduation when they move on professionally. The property will now be sold by the City at a tax title auction scheduled for June 17, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. The City will use the auction proceeds to reimburse the School Department and Putnam Vocational for all costs associated with the project and this will allow this valuable program to continue on new projects. Minimum bids on the property will start at $50,000 to cover the costs of the project.
