Mayor Menino appoints Bill McGonagle interim administrator of the Boston Housing Authority

Congratulates Sandra Henriquez on new appointment with HUD and thanks her for her leadership in Boston

Boston, MA – June 10, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced the appointment of Bill McGonagle as interim Administrator of the Boston Housing Authority. The move comes upon the departure of current Administrator Sandra Henriquez, who is taking a position with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development as Assistant Secretary of Public and Indian Housing.

McGonagle has a long history with the BHA and was born and raised in the Mary Ellen McCormack public housing development as one of a family of eight. Early in his career, he worked as a youth worker assigned primarily to the public housing developments in Brighton and later at the West Broadway public housing development in South Boston. He then became employed at the Boston Housing Authority in the Department of Public Safety as an investigator and remained with the agency until the present time.

“Bill was born and raised in public housing in Boston. This coupled with his nearly 30 years of experience at the BHA will serve him and our residents well as he undertakes his new responsibilities,” Mayor Menino said.

During his almost thirty years with the BHA, McGonagle has also worked as a housing manager and as an Area Director overseeing all of the elderly/disabled public housing in Boston. Later he served as Executive Assistant to former BHA Administrator Doris Bunte, who was the first director of a housing authority that had also lived in public housing in the nation. McGonagle has served as the BHA’s Deputy Administrator for the past 17 years.

In addition, McGonagle has been an active board member for the Committee for Boston Public Housing for 20 years. He is married and the proud father of three children and one grandchild.
