Construction Project Update Public Building Commission

Scituate, MA – January 11, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Public Building Commission of the Town of Scituate, Massachusetts will issue periodic public updates about the construction progress for the Town Library project. Groundbreaking occurred on September 1, 2015. Completion is anticipated for late 2016/early 2017.

The initial demolition phase is complete. Unforeseen conditions included discovery of asbestos-containing materials which needed to be abated prior to completion of scheduled demolition. It was also determined that the trusses supporting the part of the roof originally scheduled to be retained were structurally unsound. This resulted in a complete removal of the roof and the additional cost of designing and replacing these sections. In addition, other underlying structural deficiencies were found which will need to be corrected. Rectifying the unforeseen conditions will cost approximately $550,000 and will be funded from the the contingency expense allowance provided in the original budget.

During the next thirty days, it is anticipated that excavation for the new foundation will be complete, the new foundation will be poured, and the redesign for the entire roof will be completed.

The project remains on budget with a potential two month delay from the original completion schedule.
